Tulips become exotic and erratic as they expire in a vase. I wanted to try and capture this bunch before any more petals fell off. I exaggerated the position of the flowers to convey how they were stretching out towards me from my favourite vase.
As my mentor, Shari Blaukopf, remarks from time to time, every sketch or painting is an opportunity to learn something. So I’m going to start making a note of what I’ve learned with each sketch. In this case, another reminder to start on good paper. I just picked up a sketchbook to draw what I saw, but when it turned out quite interesting, I wanted to add colour and there are limits to what this paper can handle. Also, Slow down and observe the foliage to better capture the form and shadow.
